What is a LIMS
A LIMS or laboratory information management system is a type of enterprise software that is meant to improve the overall productivity of many types of laboratories. These systems do this by keeping track of data associated with samples, experiments, laboratory workflows, and instruments. A LIMS systems will include a variety of capabilities for R&D (research and development) labs, manufacturing and/or process engineering labs, or bioanalytical laboratories. LIMSs are dynamic because the laboratory’s requirements are rapidly evolving and different and most labs are going to have unique and varying functional needs. As such, the working definition of a LIMS depends on the individuals or groups involved.
In recent years LIMS functionality has gone beyond its traditional purpose of sample management. Assay data management, data analysis and data mining, and electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) integration have been added to LIMS, enabling the realization of translational medicine completely within a single software application suite. Additionally, the distinction between LIMS and LIS has blurred, as many LIMS now also fully support comprehensive case-centric clinical data.
