Lab Supervisor

The Technical Supervisor is considered the “technical expert” by having laboratory experience and expertise in their assigned clinical departments. They are effective team members in section management relative to communication, operations, finances and personnel management as appropriate. They work with the Section / Shift Supervisor and assist the Manager, Director and appropriate Medical Director(s) / Scientific Directors in meeting customer expectations, quality, regulatory and safety requirements

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the daily operation of the department, assuring consistent productivity through effective workflow processes.
  • Assists in the direction and documentation of the implementation and evaluation of test procedures, instrumentation and reagents. Involved in RFPs, and the development of process improvements. Ensures that all tests are scientifically accurate and performed in accordance with standard protocol.  Keeps abreast of new developments/issues related to own area of expertise.  Performs research and development with new instruments or products and compiles accurate and detailed data.
  • Researches and resolves problems and serves the department as a resource by sharing expert knowledge on technical issues such as unusual specimens, unusual test results and advanced troubleshooting.  Consults with pathologists, scientific directors and managers regarding difficult analyses, abnormal findings and conflicting results.
  • Monitors, maintains, and documents a preventative maintenance program to ensure equipment and instruments are in optimum condition.  Demonstrates advanced technical knowledge of the operation and principles of departmental instruments.
  • Utilizes the laboratory information system to ensure accurate data generation as well as appropriate data retention and retrieval.
  • Responsible for QC (including maintenance, report review, equipment logs and temperature charts). Ensure that monthly QC reports are prepared, reviewed and submitted to the Pathologist / Scientific Director or designee.
  • Assist in the development, monitoring and reporting of Quality Assurance standards and objectives. Participate in QA programs to ensure that Quality standards are met. Serve as consultant for QA/QC problem situations; work to resolve situations as they occur so that testing may continue in a timely manner.


  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Lab Science, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related science
  • 3-5 years of experience leading a clinical laboratory, specifically in Micro or molecular testing
  • ASCP Certified (must be completed by 12 months of employment)
