Position:  Histotechnician, HT or HTL

Position Summary:  Histology Technician working as part of a cohesive team in a high volume, fast paced environment

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Typical
    • Primary:  Embedding;  microtomy, cuts and mounts paraffin sections onto microscopic slides
    • Prepares slides for routine H & E and special stain procedures
    • Cover slips and routes slides and protocols to pathologists
    • Performs and documents scheduled preventative maintenance
    • Maintains records and documentation required to manage the daily workflow and provide  QC/QA monitors
    • Must be able to troubleshoot areas of processing, embedding, cutting, staining
    • Must have the capability of flexing schedule to accommodate workload to include weekend coverage
    • Files paraffin blocks and microscopic slides
    • Special Stains rotation
    • Meet all deadlines as assigned
    • Ability to communicate with laboratory staff and clients to ensure quality patient care
    • Maintains and supports a service oriented relationship with customers
    • Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to clients and patients
    • Strives to maintain a positive work environment
    • Demonstrates interpersonal skills required to successfully perform as a team member in a constantly changing environment
    • Understands and follows ALL  laboratory safety and OSHA guidelines
    • Ensures compliance with ALL local, federal, CLIA, CAP, safety and OSHA guidelines

    • Participates in all continuing education programs required to keep certification current in addition to continuing education programs provided by company.  Immunohistochemistry coverage.


Scope:  Promotes quality client/patient relations and creates supportive climate by serving as a role model for behavior.  Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory.  Adheres to all laboratory policies and regulations.  Works with minimal direction; consults with technologists and general supervisor as needed.  Functions as a liaison between the laboratory and laboratory clients.  Operates general laboratory equipment, including by not limited to:  telephones, computer keyboards and CRT, and microscopes.  Effectively communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone, and computer methods

This role will have routine access to Protected Health Information (PHI). Employees will be trained on reasonable safeguards and are expected to maintain strict confidentiality, as well as abide by all applicable privacy and security standards.  Employees are expected only to access PHI when it is required to fulfill job duties.



Required – High school graduate or equivalent. Graduation from a school of Histotechnology accredited by CAHEA/NAACLS AND HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification




Minimum – ASCP certification and two years’ experience in a fast paced, high volume laboratory with documented special stain and immunohistochemistry experience


Preferred – ASCP certification and two plus years in a fast paced, high volume laboratory with documented special stain and immunohistochemistry experience


Skills: Ability to work as a team member. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the laboratory and with laboratory clients. Ability to adapt to a changing work environment by organizing and prioritizing time and resources in order to produce the most effective work performance. Ability to assess work tasks, recognize limitations and request assistance when appropriate. Must be able to meet department standards for cutting and embedding within the probationary period.


Reporting Relationship:  Reports to the Histology Supervisor.

Physical Requirements:  Requires light to medium lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.  Requires manipulation of tools, objects, and equipment using the following physical motions:  pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching above shoulder height, grasping with both hands, pinching with thumb and forefinger, twisting with hand and wrist, climbing under, lifting up, lifting down, and reaching under.  Routinely requires coordination of two or more physical operations.

Environmental Demands:  Works in temperature controlled environment.  May encounter hazards common to a pathological laboratory and come into contact with contagious pathogens and various laboratory chemicals.  May be required to operate fire and safety equipment or follow other safety procedures in an emergency situation.  May be required to work with time constraints and in crisis situations.
