Be part of the effort to find cures for cancer!  We’re looking for a communicator who can creatively publicize research advances, clinical trials program, employment opportunities and communicate effectively with NCI’s staff members.


The contractor will:

  • Develop content to be transmitted via a variety of communications tactics and tools, including website, social media, video, digital and print to build awareness of and engagement with CCR research and programs
  • Conduct interviews and write and/or edit a variety of stories, such as features on patients, faculty awards, conferences and new clinical trials for posting on the NCI CCR website
  • Manage assignments of selected stories to freelance writers
  • Lead the production of a biweekly internal newsletter with circulation of 3,000
  • Contribute to the production of print/digital magazines
  • Participate in development of communications strategy, develop creative briefs and lead tactical campaigns
  • Develop and manage multimedia content for internal and external audiences (digital, video, audio and/or photography), including “on site” interviewing/reporting
  • Manage tracking systems for various communications metrics
  • Write, edit and distribute internal all-staff announcements



  • A Master’s degree in communications, journalism, biosciences and/or related field or equivalent professional experience
  • At least two years professional experience in communications
  • Experience in communications, public relations and/or journalism
  • Knowledge of science and/or cancer is a bonus
  • Ability to translate scientific information into copy suitable for various audiences
  • Experience in creating and executing a communications plan
  • Skill with photography, design, video and/or audio production
  • Ability to distill complex information into engaging social media posts, particularly on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook
  • Experience developing and producing digital newsletters
  • Ability to use communications-related software, such as Canva, Mailchimp, Survey Monkey, Google Analytics and Illustrator
  • Creative eye for design of communications tools such as web content, digital media, fliers and videos
  • Experience developing health and science content for a variety of audiences, especially the general public
  • Knowledge of plain language writing and editing and standard writing/grammar guidelines
  • Strong capability to work autonomously but also collaboratively as part of a team
  • Sense of humor and the ability to work flexibly and respond to changing deadlines and requirements



Hybrid – approximately an even split of remote and onsite at NIH’s main campus in Bethesda Maryland
